Der Rechtsausschuss des Repräsentantenhauses hat Ende vergangenen Monats mehrere hochrangige, zumeist ehemalige Angehörige der Regierung Bush in Sachen Folter und Menschenrechtsverletzung vorgeladen.
Insbesondere aus den Protokollen der Anhörung von Lawrence Wilkerson, dem Stabschef des damaligen Außenministers Colin Powell, ergeben sich brisante Details.
Wilkerson gab an, dass seines Wissens nach über Hundert Gefangene vor allem im berüchtigten irakischen Gefängnis Abu Ghraib ums Leben gekommen sind.
Von dieses Todesfällen müssen 25 als Mord angesehen werden.
NADLER: Your testimony said 100 detainees have died in detention; do you believe the 25 of those were in effect murdered?
WILKERSON: Mr. Chairman, I think the number’s actually higher than that now. Last time I checked it was 108.
Ein Menschrechtsbericht von Human Rights First ging im Jahr 2006 noch von bis zu Hundert Todesfällen aus, wovon 34 Selbstmord gewesen sein sollen.
Nur acht Menschen seien durch direkte Einwirkung (Folter) zu Tode gekommen:
Since August 2002, nearly 100 detainees have died while in the hands of U.S. officials in the global “war on terror.”
According to the U.S. military’s own classifications, 34 of these cases are suspected or confirmed homicides; Human Rights First has identified another 11 in which the facts suggest death as a result of physical abuse or harsh conditions of detention.
In close to half the deaths Human Rights First surveyed, the cause of death remains officially undetermined or unannounced. Overall, eight people in U.S. custody were tortured to death.
In seiner schriftlichen Stellungnahme urteilte Lawrence Wilkerson hinsichtlich der Schuldfrage:
Q: At what level did American leadership fail?
A: I believe it failed at the highest levels of the Pentagon, in the Vice President’s office, and perhaps even in the Oval Office, though the Memorandum of February 7, 2002, which I cited earlier, tends to make me think the President may have been ignorant of the worst parts of the failure.
